Understanding Spinal Disc Conditions
Spinal discs sit between the bones of the spine and help absorb forces during everyday movement. Over time, discs may lose some of their water content or develop structural changes. A herniated disc occurs when disc material extends beyond its usual boundary.
These changes are common and do not always cause pain. Symptoms may develop when a disc or related inflammation affects nearby structures, particularly spinal nerves.
What Is the Difference?
Herniated Disc
A herniated disc occurs when part of the disc extends beyond its normal outer boundary. Depending on its location, it may irritate or compress a nearby nerve and cause pain that travels into an arm or leg.
Degenerative Disc Changes
Degenerative disc changes refer to changes in the structure of a disc over time. In some people, these changes may contribute to back or neck pain, although imaging findings alone do not establish the cause of symptoms.
Common Symptoms
Symptoms vary and may include:
Localized back or neck pain
Pain extending into an arm, hand, buttock, or leg
Tingling or numbness
Discomfort with certain movements or positions
Muscle weakness when a nerve is significantly affected
The location of the affected disc and whether nerves are involved influence the symptoms experienced.
How Are Disc Conditions Evaluated?
Evaluation may include a review of your symptoms and medical history, a physical and neurological examination, and imaging when indicated. MRI may be useful when symptoms or examination findings suggest a disc-related problem involving nerves.
The goal is to determine whether the disc findings are likely to explain your symptoms and whether further evaluation is needed.
Treatment Options
Treatment depends on the specific condition and its severity. Options may include:
Conservative management and activity guidance
Epidural steroid injections for selected cases of nerve-related pain
Selective nerve root injections when clinically appropriate
Other targeted procedures for a confirmed source of pain
Surgical evaluation when significant nerve compression or progressive neurological deficits are present
No single treatment is appropriate for every disc condition. A personalized assessment helps determine the best approach.
